How to best grow potatoes
at home

How a potato becomes a seed potato & The difference between seed and ordinary potatoes!

Any normal potato will sprout from the eyes and produce a new plant to
reproduce itself. That is nature’s way.
Unfortunately, any diseases in the potato will reproduce as well, and for this
reason potato farmers will plant their crops using only “seed potatoes”, grown
by specialist growers under very controlled conditions. Certified seed takes
this a step further and is grown according to set regulations and inspected by
a certification body whose job it is to make sure rules are followed and that the
“seed” reaches the quality standards expected. People buying seed with the
ViCSPA certification label attached know that the potatoes have reached those
high standards.

Who SPV are?

Seed Potatoes Victoria (SPV) is a grower managed organisation that
represents the interests of it’s certified seed grower members throughout
Victoria and South Australia. These growers are located central to Ballarat,
Gippsland, Kinglake, the Otways, Portland and Kangaroo Island.
The SPV committee is a representative body made up of grower delegates
from each seed growing area who meet every 2 months. These meetings
also involve ViCSPA (the Victorian Certified Seed Potato Authority) and DPI
(Department of Primary Industries) and work on projects to improve the seed
potato industry
